Magic Knight Rayearth (魔法騎士 レイアース?) is a Japanese Majikku Naito Reiāsumanga series created by Clamp, an all-female manga artist team consisting of Satsuki Igarashi, Ageha Ohkawa, Tsubaki Nekoi and Mokona. Appearing as a serial in the manga magazine Nakayoshi from November 1993 to February 1995, the chapters of Magic Knight Rayearth were collected into three bound volumes by Kodansha and published from July 1994 to March 1995. It was licensed by Tokyopop for North America in 1997.
A sequel, Magic Knight Rayearth II, was serialized in the same manga magazine from March 1995 to April 1996 issue and was published by Kodansha in three bound volumes from July 1995 to April 1996. Magic Knight Rayearth II volumes #1-3 were numbered as Magic Knight Rayearth volumes "#4-6" as serialization of the original series.
Overview[]
The series follows three eighth-grade girls who find themselves transported from modern-day Japan into the magical world of Cephiro, where they are tasked with helping to save Cephiro.
Volume 1[]
The first volume opens up with three middle school girls on a field trip to Tokyo Tower in where they are magically transported into the world of Cephiro, a land controlled by the will of those living in it and by the power of the one who acts as the Pillar. The girls arrive and are suddenly confronted by a child-looking mage who is much older than he looks. He explains to them the situation that Cephiro is in and that they were called to the world by Princess Emeraude to become the Magic Knights and save Cephiro. Now accompanied by Mokona, the girls then travel to the Forest of Silence to meet with Presea, the artisan who will create for them the weapons they need to battle Zagato and revive the Mashin. First, they must go to the Spring of Eterna to gather the needed mineral, Escudo, to create said weapons. The first volume ends with the girls being saved from a large monster by a mysterious, scarred man.
